It's obviously a huge loss for Indiana, which hosted an NCAA Tournament regional in back-to-back seasons for the first time ever. Smith helped Indiana make the Big Ten relevant in baseball, which it hadn't been in a long time.
The Hoosiers advanced to the College World Series last year and earned the No. 4 overall seed in this year's tournament, but was upset by Stanford in the regional.
Arizona State is a more traditional power in baseball, playing in the Pac 12. Indiana lost its core after this season, so the timing does make sense for Smith. Nevertheless, it's a tough loss for IU and the Big Ten.
