Indiana has added a new member to its 2014-15 roster.
Nate Ritchie, a 6-foot-7 forward from Northridge High School near South Bend, announced on Twitter Tuesday that he will attend Indiana as a preferred walk-on.
Ritchie fits with what Indiana coach Tom Crean has said he wanted to change about his walk-on situation in that he figures to be much more of a contributor than some of the walk-ons in past years.
"It's crazy. I can't even express how excited I am," Ritchie said. "Both of my parents went to IU so I have grown up coming to IU games. I talked with my high school coach about trying to walk on at IU and he reached out to coach [Tim] Buckley, and it went from there."
Ritchie averaged 23.8 points and 7.4 rebounds per game for Northridge last season, according to MaxPreps. He shot 37 percent on 3-pointers and 60 percent on twos.
Ritchie is OK with whatever role he ends up having for the Hoosiers. His main goal is just to push the scholarship players and learn as a player.
But don't rule out Ritchie earning some quality minutes, too.
"I'm honestly just trying to head in there and do whatever I can to make the team better," Ritchie said. "Not only that, but to get better and learn as a player."
Ritchie is not yet sure when he will arrive on campus to join the team, but it should be sometime soon.
