The July evaluation period opens at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, which means Indiana coach Tom Crean and his staff will be plenty busy.
There are plenty of events this weekend, including an adidas Gauntlet event in Indianapolis. Here are a few things to keep an eye on throughout the July evaluation period. [Note: I will be out in Indy this weekend and in Las Vegas for the Adidas 64 in two weeks. We will have you covered.]
1. Who will Crean focus on?: Crean will undoubtedly watch a number of guys every week throughout the month, but who will he watch most, specifically in the class of 2015? Indiana is still without a committed recruit in that class, so it wouldn't surprise me if he spent the majority of his time scouting that class.
2. Who will watch the 2016 targets?: Indiana is in very good shape with elite targets in the 2016 class, but how much time will Crean spend watching them? Crean has always been great about balancing his time and finding a way to watch a ton of guys, but if he's spending most of his time on the 2015 class, maybe it'll be Chuck Martin, Tim Buckley and Steve McClain scouting the 2016 class.
The names to watch in this class are Tyus Battle, Thon Maker (who could reclassify to 2015), T.J. Leaf, De'Ron Davis, Payton Pritchard, Eli Wright and Nick Rakocevic. Indiana needs to make sure it gets a visit from Maker in August like he plans to do, as well as visits from others. Battle's father told me Tyus will not visit Indiana this summer, but the Hoosiers need to stay in good shape with him.
Chuck Martin Effect: Now that Martin is officially on board, what kind of impact will he have this month? It will be his first real test as a member of IU's staff, and I think he could make a significant impact. What guys will he focus on? Where will he be? That will also be interesting to track.
