Marshall thinking visits
One player who really made big strides during the summer was Nick Marshall. The 6-foot-10 center is a high level run and jump athlete who is just now tapping into his potential. With Team Thad he made major progress, and now is beginning to think about his college visits. “He had a good development from April until July,” said Team Thad AAU Coach Norton Hurd. “He just started playing basketball in ninth grade, and finally really started to come around during the high school season. When we got into the April evaluation period he played okay, and then when it got to June we practiced and then in July he showed everybody he can be one of the best big men in the country.” On the recruiting trail Marshall picked up schools like Mississippi State, Florida, South Carolina, Connecticut, Memphis, Indiana, and others. About the recruitment, Hurd said, “It has been good. He’s really enjoyed the recruiting process, but he is kind of a country kid who has never had this much attention so at times he can get tired of it, but he is enjoying it.” In terms of upcoming trips, a few schools seem in line to get visits. “We are putting together official visits,” explained Hurd. “I think South Carolina will happen soon. He will take either an official or unofficial with Mississippi State, and then UConn and Indiana have also been seeing what they can do to get a visit.” About the Mississippi State Bulldogs, Hurd said, “He likes the coaching staff there and he feels they are making that turn. Mississippi State feels if they can get Nick Marshall and LeGerald Vick that they would have enough athletes and would be done re-building. They have point guards, they have rebounders, they just need guys like Nick and they would be done re-building.” Another school that has been very active recently is Indiana. The Hoosiers offered in July, and since then have been making Marshall a priority. “The appeal with Indiana is they had big men that were taken in the lottery in back-to-back years,” explained Hurd. “Add in their development with a guy like Victor Oladipo, and it is a top five historical school in college basketball. It is pretty simple with them, it is a great program.” With a national title to his credit already, Connecticut coach Kevin Ollie is also making a strong run at Marshall. “The only negative would be distance, but their alumni list is impressive,” explained Hurd. “You feel you have a chance to make the NBA if you go there, and it is UConn, they just won the national title. There is a lot to like with them.” South Carolina will get a trip from Marshall, and Hurd says they have been recruiting him hard for a long period of time. “Lamont Evans has been recruiting Nick for a while,” said Hurd. “He’s pretty comfortable with that coaching staff, and they feel if they get Nick they would have the pieces to really start rolling.” For now there is no specific timeframe for decision from Marshall other than he plans to commit in the early signing period.
