Scouting the Opponent: Washington

Indiana will play No. 6 Washington on Saturday at the Shindigz National Soccer Festival in Fort Wayne, Ind. Read on to find out what the Hoosiers will be up against as they close out the preseason.

Indiana will conclude its preseason schedule with an exhibition match today at the Shindigz National Soccer Festival in Fort Wayne, Ind. vs. No. 6 Washington.

The Huskies defeated No. 10 Michigan State 1-0 Thursday night, the first day of the festival.

The Hoosiers face a Huskies team that is coming off its most successful season in school history after posting a 16-2-4 record and winning percentage of .818.

Playing a preseason top-10 team will be a good test for the Hoosiers. With a defensive backline that has more questions than answers, IU will be going up against one of the best offenses from last season.

The Huskies were tied with Delaware and Virginia for fourth in total goals scored with 45. The Huskies also had the ninth-best scoring offense in the nation, averaging 2.05 goals per game.

Defensively, Washington was just outside the Top 25 in shutout percentage. It posted shutouts in 10 of its 22 games, good for 45 percent and 26th in the country.

Washington also only allowed 17 goals last season.

Senior forward Darwin Jones returns for the Huskies after a strong 2013 campaign in which he was tied for the team-high in goals with seven. The other seven-goal scorer, sophomore midfielder Cristian Roldan, also returns.

Jones, Roldan and sophomore forward Mason combined to score 20 of the team’s 45 goals last season.

IU will certainly be challenged and get a good look at how prepared they’ll be for the regular season. Look for a recap on after the match. Top Stories
