Memphis lands local big
The Memphis Tigers have long loved run and jump athletes on the interior, and now they have landed another in local product Nick Marshall. The 6-foot-11 center from Lexington (Tenn.) picked the Tigers on Tuesday afternoon. “I have committed to Memphis,” Marshall reported to Scout.com. “It just felt right for me. I have a great relationship with the coaches, especially Coach (Robert) Kirby and it felt like a family there. I feel like I can really fit in and succeed.” Marshall chose the Tigers over offers from Florida, South Carolina, Indiana, Mississippi State, Tennessee, Connecticut, and a host of other schools. This summer Marshall really exploded on to the scene running with Team Thad on the AAU circuit, and according to his Coach Norton Hurd, the Tigers did a great job of recruiting Marshall and his best basketball is ahead of him. “Nick played really well for us this summer,” said Hurd. “He really came on in July and earned his offers. Once he decided to stay close to home it came down to Memphis, South Carolina, and Mississippi State, but in the end he wanted to represent his hometown and he picked Memphis.” Hurd continued, “One big thing is that Memphis really needs him. He is the only true center that they are recruiting, and he should have a chance to come in and compete to start right away.” Marshall himself has big plans for when he enrolls at Memphis. “First and foremost I want to get my degree,” Marshall explained. “After that it is about basketball, and with who Memphis is bringing in, in 2015 and 2016 I really think we will have a chance to win a national championship.” Now when Marshall does enroll at Memphis could be a bit of a surprise to some. “Right now the plan is for Nick to go to the 2016 class,” explained Hurd. “Nick needs to get stronger and he just turned 17 a few weeks ago, so he is young for his class. Now it is possible he could stay in the 2015 class if he really grows and matures this year, but for right now the plan is for him to re-classify and be in the 2016 class.” With this commitment Marshall becomes the second 2016 pledge for Memphis. Marshall joins five-star Dedric Lawson as commitments for the Tigers.
