Indiana State SYCAMORES

Record: 0-0 (1-11 in 2013)

Key Players (2013 stats):

QB No. 15 – Mike Perish, 6-3, 225 lbs., Sr., Frankfort, Ill. 139-243, 1,586 yds., 14 TD, 10 INTs Started eight games last year and is in third season as the Sycamores starter. He is fifth all-time in career passing yards for ISU with 3,201.

LB/DE No. 55 – Connor Underwood, 6-3, 240 lbs., Jr., Washington, Ill. (Washington Community) 76 tackles (18 TFL), 9 sacks. Last year vs. Indiana, had a 31-yard interception return for a touchdown to go along with five pass breakups and seven quarterback hurries as well as one fumble recovery and one forced fumble. All-MVFC First Team 2013

LB No. 20 – Jameer Thurman, 6-0, 215 lbs., So., Chicago (Proviso West), Ill. 91 tackles (9 TFL), 4 sacks. The Sycamores’ leading tackler was named MVFC All-Newcomer Team (2nd in league’s Freshman of the Year balloting).

Key Wins: Last year, ISU’s only win came in a 70-7 drubbing of Quincy University, a Division II school that went 2-9 last year.

Worst Loss: In 2013, not much went right for ISU, as the Sycamores went 1-11. So it’s essentially pick your poison when it comes to the worst loss. I’ll say the 55-14 loss to 3-4 Illinois State was pretty rough, considering the Sycamores were down 24-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Head Coach : Mike Sanford (USC, 1978) - 1-11 in 2nd season at ISU, 17-54 in 7th season overall.

Hoosier Connections:

In all, 29 ISU players hail from the state of Indiana.

ISU LB Jordan Wallace transferred from Indiana after two seasons for Kevin Wilson. Wallace did not see any action in his two seasons at IU and was a two-time scout player of the week.

Wallace and fellow ISU LB Katrell Moss attended Warren Central in Indianapolis and were high school teammates with IU RB Anthony Davis.

IU’s Jacob Bailey, Anthony Corsaro, Kyle Kennedy and Kyle Loechel all went to Cathedral High School in Indianapolis while ISU’s Sampson Levingston and James Officer also attended Cathedral.

Key Matchups:

The ISU O-line is large, but inexperienced (34 starts combined). With the Hoosiers’ new blitz packages and with the talent that IU has on the D-line, expect QB Mike Perish to be pressured early and often. Another unit that is weak for Indiana State is the cornerback position, so look for IU’s speedy receivers to take advantage, especially with the quick offensive pace we’re accustomed to seeing. Last year, IU torched ISU for 73 points, a Memorial Stadium record. The Hoosiers put up 632 yards, including 313 on the ground against an overmatched ISU defense.

Indiana State has lost 14 in a row to FBS teams and has never beaten a Big Ten school (0-5 vs. Indiana, 0-4 vs. Purdue, 0-2 vs. Minnesota and 0-1 vs. Penn State).

ISU is 43-59-7 in season openers and hasn’t won an opener since defeating St. Joseph’s 57-7 to open 2010.

ISU returns 17 starters, including 10 on defense to go along with six on offense and one on special teams.
