Davis receives standing ovation

Former Indiana University coach Mike Davis returned to Assembly Hall Monday night with Texas Southern and received a standing ovation when he was introduced.

The combination of a 6 p.m. start and snowy conditions outside have kept the crowd away to this point at Assembly Hall.

But that didn’t prevent those in attendance from giving former Indiana and current Texas Southern coach Mike Davis from receiving a standing ovation Monday night.

Davis stood up as the fans reacted and waved to the crowd. Standing beside him were two others were IU ties – his son Mike Davis Jr., who played at IU for his father, and Donnie Marsh, who was an assistant at Indiana for Davis. Both are assistant coaches on the Texas Southern staff.

“It’s good to be back,’’ Davis told AllHoosiers.com in the hallway at floor level in the arena about 90 minutes before game time. “I have a lot of good memories of this place.’’

Davis was the Indiana coach for six years, taking over for Bob Knight in September of 2000.

At least two of his former players are in attendance tonight at Assembly Hall. Kyle Hornsby is seating behind the IU bench and Errek Suhr is the color commentator on the IU Radio Network.
