We're now nearly three weeks into the high school basketball season in the state of Indiana. Let's take a look at how some of the in-state IU targets have fared thus far.
Before that, though, just a quick note: Indiana's Tom Crean and Chuck Martin are watching 2016 Brooklyn guard Rawle Alkins tonight while they're in New York for tomorrow night's game against No. 4 Louisville at Madison Square Garden. Alkins was at Hoosier Hysteria and is one of IU's top guard targets in 2016.
2017 G/F Zach Gunn (Hamilton Southeastern): Gunn, who owns an Indiana offer, is off to a solid start to his sophomore season. The 6-foot-6 Gunn is averaging 20.3 points and 11 rebounds through three games while shooting 42 percent from the field. Those numbers are somewhat slanted, however, because of his 34-point, 10-rebound performance against Lake Central in the season opener.
Gunn and Hamilton Southeastern were blown out, 62-30, by Pendleton Heights over the weekend, and Gunn was just 4-of-15 for 12 points. Shameless plug: My little brother, Mark, plays for Pendleton Heights, and he's going to be a player. He's averaging 10.4 points per game through his first five as a sophomore.
2016 C Caleb Swanigan (Homestead): Complete statistics for Swanigan are unavailable, but he's playing great as a junior at Homestead High School in Fort Wayne. Swanigan had 39 points and 21 rebounds on 12-of-15 shooting in a showcase game in late November. Michigan State and Kentucky are considered the favorites for Swanigan at this point, but he is close friends with IU freshman James Blackmon Jr., so you never know. Tom Crean offered Swanigan very early.
2017 G Justin Roberts (Pike): Roberts, a sophomore guard at Pike in Indianapolis, is averaging 16.0 points, 5.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game through four games. Roberts has scored at least 12 points in all four games and is shooting 44 percent from the field. He's just 2-of-13 from beyond the arc, however. Roberts has 20 assists and only nine turnovers, better than a 2:1 assist-to-turnover ratio. He does not yet own an Indiana offer, but has drawn interest.
2017 G Paul Scruggs (Southport): There's only one game worth of data available for Scruggs on MaxPreps.com. In that contest -- a win over Brownsburg -- Scruggs had 12 points and 10 rebounds on 5-of-12 shooting. According to multiple reports, Scruggs had 17 points and 12 rebounds in a loss to Ben Davis over the weekend. Scruggs has an Indiana offer has drawn considerable interest nationally.
