Hawkins, a top 50 wide receiver in the 2013 class and a three-star recruit, redshirted for the Gators in 2013 and then spent time working as both a receiver and a safety during the following spring. He opted to transfer before the 2014 season, was granted a waiver from Florida, and chose UAB. Transfer rules forced him to sit out all of last season, so he never played a down at UAB.
Hawkins is eligible to play immediately at Indiana because UAB announced last week that the football program will be shut down.
Hawkins, 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds, is a big get for Kevin Wilson and his staff and should have the opportunity to start immediately for the Hoosiers. Hawkins is IU's 11th recruit in the 2015 class.
Also on Wednesday, junior college quarterback Chad Kelly announced that he would transfer to Ole Miss from East Mississippi. Indiana pursued Kelly, the nephew of former NFL quarterback Jim Kelly, but the Hoosiers came up short.
