Indiana vs. Kentucky: Stream of consciousness

Here's are quick, stream of consciousness thoughts as I watch Indiana-Kentucky on Saturday evening.

DES MOINES, Iowa ---

FIRST HALF THOUGHTS

**Indiana struggled to get into its offense early because Kentucky worked to deny Yogi Ferrell the ball. Ferrell looked tentative against Tyler Ulis for much of the half, but seemed to get angry toward the end and began to attack Ulis off the dribble.

**Indiana's bench has made a huge difference, especially OG Anunoby. In the first half, he guarded Ulis, blocked Jamal Murray's shot near the end of the half, scored 4 points, had 2 rebounds, and stole the ball from Ulis off the dribble. He was terrific, especially defensively. Indiana stayed in the game for awhile because of its defense.

**Robert Johnson reinjured his ankle, and that's very bad news for Indiana. Johnson went back to the IU locker room briefly before returning to the bench. Johnson returned to the floor with his shooting shirt on and did not participate in warmups before the second half. It appears unlikely he will play in the second half, which is a major blow for IU. Guard depth is very limited, and Johnson was needed to guard Murray.

**Indiana closed the half very well, and that's something you have to do in the NCAA Tournament. Kentucky has some foul concerns, as does IU. Thomas Bryant and Troy Williams have two fouls apiece..

SECOND HALF THOUGHTS

**What a great start to the half for Indiana. Hoosiers ran a set play to get Yogi Ferrell a layup and then Nick Zeisloft buried a deep 3. Hoosiers up 38-32 as John Calipari calls a timeout just 1:29 into the half. Johnson, by the way, is done for the day.

**Injuries are piling up for Indiana. OG Anunoby took his right shoe off on the bench and Juwan Morgan re-injured his left shoulder again. Zeisloft also has 3 fouls with 11:01 to go. Indiana leads 45-44 after a driving basket from Collin Hartman. Tom Crean was irate that Hartman didn't get a foul, too.

**Yogi Ferrell has completely outplayed Ulis in this half. Making it hard for Ulis to get anything, and he hasn't gotten to the rim like he did early.

**This is beginning to look like one for the ages. Indiana and Kentucky are tied 50-50 with 7:44 left. Walk-on Ryan Burton just drew a foul on Tyler Ulis, his third, but it looked like a travel to me. Thomas Bryant has outplayed all of the UK big men inside.

**If Indiana ends up winning this game, look no further than right here for the reason why. Indiana went from losing to up 6 with Yogi Ferrell on the bench and walk-on Ryan Burton in. Tom Crean with a terrific called play out of a timeout for a 3-point play. Crean has had a very nice afternoon.

**Indiana up 66-60 with 1:05 to go. Hoosiers went up 9 on a dunk by Bryant, but Ulis quickly answered with a 3. Ulis and Ferrell have been a treat to watch. Two gamers.

**Indiana wins 73-67. Best coaching job of Tom Crean's career, beating Calipari and Kentucky with a shorthanded team. IU will advance to the Sweet 16 to play winner of North Carolina-Providence.
