4-star point guard Alex Barcello looking at Indiana, aiming to make a visit

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Indiana has a new option emerging as potential point guard recruit who says IU is one of the programs he'd like to visit after the July evaluation period ends.

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Indiana has a new option emerging as potential point guard recruit.

Alex Barcello, a 6-foot-3 four-star prospect from powerhouse Corona Del Sol High School in Gilbert, Ariz., has been getting increased interested from the Hoosiers.

IU coach Tom Crean and assistants Tim Buckley and Chuck Martin all watched Barcello here at the Peach Invitational Tournament. An IU coach has been present at all three of Barcello’s games that Peegs.com watched.

“I’ve been talking to Tim Buckley a lot,” Barcello told peegs.com. “Coach Crean reached out to me before I left for this even. That was the first time I talked to him, but I’ve definitely built a close relationship with coach Buckley.

“He said coach Crean hasn’t seen me a lot, but he’s seen a lot of tape on me. Buckley said Crean wanted to see me in person. I know they’ve been coming to my games here.”

Barcello said he knows Indiana’s basketball history and is familiar with IU’s style.

“I know they’re the Hoosier. I know they have a great past. I know coach Crean is a great coach and they have a great coaching staff,” Barcello said.

“Their players always play hard. They’re an uptempo team, very athletic. They want to get the ball up the floor, get the ball to the open man. I think my game really relates to that. I really like that.”

Barcello said he’s aware of Crean’s player development program and that aspect of a program matters to him.

“It’s huge,” he said. “I want them to make me the best player I can be. My dream is to get to the NBA. I’m going to work as hard as I can.

“I want a great coaching staff behind me that’s pushing me every day. A couple coaches just tell you what you want to hear. I like the coaches that are honest with me and tell me what I need to work on, and when they tell  me that, I work on it.”

Barcello currently has offers from Arizona, Stanford, Virginia, Arizona State, USC, Baylor, Georgia Tech, Creighton, Butler and others.

“Arizona, Virginia, Stanford, Butler, Indiana, Baylor, Georgia Tech, Creighton, St. Mary’s and Cal, those are the schools that are on me really hard right now,” he said. “All those have offered except Cal and Indiana.”

He has made unofficial visits to Virginia, Wake Forest, Arizona, Stanford and St. Mary’s. He has all five official visits available.

“I definitely want to get out to Arizona, Virginia, Stanford, Indiana, Butler, Georgia Tech and Baylor. I definitely want to check those schools out.”

As a player, Barcello shoots the ball very well off the bounce and off the catch, both inside and outside the arc.

He moves well to spots, has good form and goes straight up and down on his shots. He has solid quickness, handles the ball well, and has solid change of direction.

He has active eyes on the move and can set up passes.

On Saturday afternoon, Barcello scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Oakland Soldiers to a 73-72 win over Southern Stampede. He shot 9-for-20 from the field, including 2-for-7 from the arc in a physical game.

In an earlier game here, Barcello scored a team-high 19 points — 16 coming in the second half after he got in foul trouble and sat most of the first half — in a 73-69 win. He shot 5-for-6 from 2-point range on mainly mid-range jumpers off the dribble, 1-for-3 from the arc and 6-for-6 form the line.

Corona Del Sol won four consecutive Arizona state titles before being upset in the quarterfinals in 2016.
