On the final day of the first July evaluation period, Indiana head coach Tom Crean headed to Philadelphia to get a courtside seat for the nation’s top ranked guard.
Just days after catching Trevon Duval at the Under Armour All-American Camp in Charlotte, the Hoosier coach was in Philadelphia to watch Duval and his WeR1 club team battle Philly Pride in the Elevate Hoops Summer Showdown.
It was a two-for-one scouting trip as Philly Pride is led by another guard that holds an Indiana scholarship offer, 6-foot-3 David Beatty. The Philadelphia native plays at St. Benedict’s Prep in Newark, New Jersey.
Duval is from nearby Wilmington, Delaware. His WeR1 team pulled out a 58-57 victory in the morning quarterfinal match-up.
Currently ranked as the No. 4 overall player in the country by scout.com, Duval spoke to Peegs.com during the Under Armour All-American Camp about Indiana picking up interest this summer.
“Yes, I talked to coach Tom Crean the other day,” Duval said.
It wasn’t the first recent contact from the Big Ten program which offered Duval about a year ago.
“He (Crean) texts me a lot, sends me things about the school,” Duval said. “He was asking me how the (Steph) Curry Camp was going. So he’s in contact.”
Duval seems to welcome the interest.
“I watched them a lot when they had Victor Oladipo. Then I watched them some last year and I see the fit.”
As you might expect, the competition for Duval is fierce. In Charlotte he rattled off UCLA, Arizona, Maryland, SMU, Oregon, Villanova andSeton Hall and made it clear there were plenty others including the Hoosiers on his trail.
The list gets narrowed soon according to his comments to Scout at the recent Curry Camp.
“I am just going to see how July goes and see what coaches are talking about,” said Duval. “Then in August I will release a top 10 or 15 or something like that.”
