Earlier this week the Hoosiers picked up commit number 13 when in-state prospect Caleb Jones pledged to the IU program. Peegs.com caught up with the 6-foot-9, 320-pound offensive lineman from Indianapolis Lawrence North H.S. to get his thoughts on why he chose Indiana.
Jones said that IU has always been the top school for him and he realized that no matter how hard he looked he wasn’t going to find a school that could offer him what they can.
“Deep down I kind of always thought Indiana was the right school,” he said. “I would always look at other schools to compare to Indiana, and then I finally realized that I couldn’t compare anyone to Indiana because they are the best for me. So with the coaching staff and their production and with everything they’ve been doing on offense and with offensive linemen it was hard to turn down.”
The big offensive tackle said that when he called the coaches to let them know he was committing they were pretty pumped about it.
“I called Coach (Greg) Frey and told him first, and then he got me on a three-way call with him and Coach (Kevin) Wilson and we all talked for about 15 minutes,” Jones said. “Coach Frey was fired up when I told them and so was Coach Wilson. They were both pretty excited about it.”
The Indianapolis native said that the recent success IU offensive linemen have been having was something that definitely got his attention.
“That’s huge because that is my ultimate goal, to get to the next level,” Jones said about the success of IU linemen. “Having a coach that can do that like Coach Frey is hard to turn down.”
Jones said that Coach Wilson and Coach Frey have told him they are very impressed with his combination of size and athleticism.
“They have stressed to me since the beginning that I have great footwork for a man of my size and stature,” he said about the message from IU. “They also like the effort I play with, especially for someone as big as I am.”
The Lawrence North H.S. standout comes from a very pro-Indiana family so they were naturally very excited to hear that he would be playing for the Hoosiers.
“My family is extremely excited about my decision,” Jones said. “They would’ve been supportive of whatever school I would’ve picked, but they are especially happy because a lot of my family are IU alumni. Since I have a very large family they have been getting a lot of calls and texts from aunts, uncles, cousins and just everybody and they are all extremely excited. And my parents are excited because they don’t have to pay for college.”
Jones said he is relieved to have the decision over with because now he can focus all his attention on his senior season at Lawrence North.
“It’s huge just for the reason that I can finally focus on my team and our ultimate goal of getting to a state championship,” he said. “If I can focus on making my O-line better and my team better I can lead us to wherever it is we may go.”
The three-star recruit chose IU over offers from Illinois, Purdue, Cincinnati, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Miami (OH), Ohio and Western Michigan.
