Last month the Indiana coaching staff had a chance to work with offensive lineman Jerry Drake Jr. at a satellite camp hosted by Florida Atlantic. The Hoosiers obviously liked what they saw from the 6-foot-7, 311-pound standout from Palm Beach Gardens (FL) Palm Beach Gardens H.S. because last week they extended him a scholarship offer.
Drake said that he enjoyed getting the opportunity to be coached by the IU staff because he liked working with them and because he could tell they were very knowledgeable.
“I definitely liked what they were doing,” he said about the Hoosiers. “They were coaching me up on different things and showing me what I need to do to get better. They seemed pretty cool and I could tell they knew what they were talking about.”
The three-star recruit said that his communication with the Indiana coaches started soon after the camp at Florida Atlantic.
“After the FAU Camp I talked to some of the coaches and they asked me how I would feel about being recruited by Indiana,” Drake said. “I told them I would be interested because I have always liked that school because it is a good academic school. So a couple days ago I got a letter in the mail with an offer from Indiana.”
Drake said that when it comes to his decision the factors he will focus on are academics and finding a place where he feels comfortable.
“Academics are big for me,” he said when asked what he is looking for in a school. “The big thing for me is to just go to a school first on a visit and see how I like it. I want to see how I like the environment and how I like the players. Location doesn’t really matter. I am just trying to find which school fits me best.”
The talented prospect currently has offers from Indiana, Illinois, Purdue, Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Kentucky, Louisville, LSU, Mississippi State, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Central Florida, South Florida and Florida Atlantic. He said that at this time he is still considering everyone.
“I am still looking at a lot of schools,” Drake said about his recruiting. “I don’t really have any favorites or any that are sticking out.”
Drake is on a different recruiting schedule than most prospects because he plans on being an early enrollee.
“I am not really sure,” he said when asked about a timeframe for deciding. “I will be an early graduate so it will obviously be before December, but I don’t really know yet when I might decide. I want to take some official visits before I make a decision.”
One school that the Florida native would like to visit so that he can get a better feel for what they have to offer is IU.
“I definitely want to check Indiana out,” he said. “It is a good school and it seems like a place I would like. I was really happy to get that offer.”
