Indiana basketball coach Tom Crean had strong comments about his juniors on live postgame radio after the Hoosiers’ loss to Michigan on Sunday.
Here are Crean’s entire postgame radio comments:
“We didn’t make enough shots, and we didn’t guard the ball screen well enough. Our rotations weren’t where they needed to be. We’ve got to get that figured out. We just did not guard the ball we’’ enough.
“But at the end of the day, we’re going to call it what it is. We’re scoring points inside, but we’re not making any shots. We’re not making jump shots. We’re just not. We’ve got to figure it out. I’ve got to do a better job of figuring out how we’re going to get it.”
“When you’re 4 of 19 from 3 with the guys that we have, I guess we’ll credit the defense today. I haven’t watched the film yet.
“But we’re not — we let our lack of shooting — I’ve never coached a team with this lack of maturity when it comes to being able to respond and rebound from when things aren’t going well for them personally, and that includes my teams that won six and 10 games.
“I’ve got to do a much better job because we don’t respond and then our communication breaks down. It’s not even close. I don’t know. We’ll figure it out.
“But I mean, when we shoot the way we did against Purdue, when we shoot the way we did tonight and we let it affect us on the other end, and some of the turnovers are absolutely ridiculous.
“We’re going to have a few with the post because we’re throwing it inside. It’s getting hard to fathom some of the turnovers we have with our guards.
“I’ve got to figure it out and do a better job. And apologize to the fans for the way we played tonight. Obviously whether I want it or not, it falls on my shoulders. So I’m going to get right back to work and try to figure out something that will help give us a better opportunity next time we play.”
Radio host Don Fischer: Tom, I know you’re probably not looking at positives at this point, but you did have one in De’Ron Davis. He played very, very well when he was in there.
Tom Crean: “He played far better than Thomas did today. Thomas, a lot on his shoulders, though. Thomas is really trying to lead a team, and he’s not getting a lot of help. He’s not getting a lot of help at all.
“I’m not going to blame Thomas. He’s wearing the weight of the world on his shoulders. Didn’t have a lot of fun playing today, which is not good.
“But he’s trying to make up for a group of juniors that just really have no ability right now to see past themselves when it comes to what it takes for us to be successful as a team, when it comes to communication.
“We probably need to figure out by now, we’re not shooting it as well, so we probably better be able to accept that we still have to come down and guard better. And we just didn’t.”
“De’Ron did a nice job, and it was in front of his mother the last couple nights. To rebound from the crack that he took in the head the other day, to come back out and play like that, it was impressive. Got to find ways to utilized him even more.”
Fischer: Coach, thank you for joining us.
