Aidan Rafferty

D.C. lineman interested in the Hoosiers

Offensive lineman Aidan Rafferty talks about his interest in IU after picking up an offer from the Hoosiers.

Earlier this month IU extended an offer to Aidan Rafferty from Washington (D.C.) Gonzaga College H.S. The 6-foot-6, 285-pound offensive line prospect spoke to Peegs.com about his recruiting, and about picking up an offer from Indiana.

The Hoosiers first started recruiting Rafferty after they added Mike Hart to their staff as the running backs coach.

“Mike Hart, the new running backs coach, had been in contact with me when he was at Syracuse,” Rafferty said. “They were my first offer and I had been communicating with him there. We had a pretty good relationship. We would message with each other on Twitter every so often. After he went to Indiana he showed my tape to the rest of the coaches, and a couple days later he called me and told me they watched my tape and they really liked it and they were offering me a scholarship.”

The Washington, D.C. native said he does not know a great deal about Indiana, but he has heard they offer a good combination of academics and athletics.

“I know they have really good academics,” Rafferty said. “I also know their sports programs are good so that is definitely really intriguing.”

When it comes to his recruiting the talented prospect said there are a few different factors he will be focused on.

“I will look at my relationship with the coaches and the players there,” Rafferty said. “The academics will also be important to me. I want to major in either business or philosophy, and I might major in both. The football program and the sports there will also be a factor. Location isn’t a big deal to me. I am kind of looking past that and just trying to look at the school itself and everything it has to offer.”

This past fall Rafferty got his first taste of varsity football for a Gonzaga College team that had a better season than many were expecting them to.

“I believe we went 8-2 and we lost in the semi-finals of the playoffs,” he said about his junior season. “I thought our team last year was great. We were the underdogs, and no one expected us to much of anything, but we had some pretty good wins against good teams in the regular season. For me individually, that was my first year of playing on varsity, and I felt like throughout the season I got much better going against a lot of good defensive ends. I think my football I.Q. really improved last year as the season went along.”

The big lineman plans on getting over to Bloomington for a visit once he and his parents can find the right weekend to visit.

“Me and my parents are looking at the calendar to try and figure out the best dates to get over there for a visit,” Rafferty said. “We’re going to do that soon, we’ve just got to come up with a date.”

Rafferty currently has offers from Indiana, Maryland, Boston College, Louisville, N.C. State, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Navy, Columbia, Dartmouth, Harvard, Yale and Princeton. He said that he hopes to have his decision made by the end of the summer.

“Ideally, I would like to do it before the season starts, but if I’m not 100 percent ready to decide I will wait until I feel comfortable,” he said about his timetable for committing.
