New Indiana basketball coach Archie Miller talked with 2017 IU signee Al Durham and his family.
Durham has asked for his release but IU has not yet granted that. Al Durham Sr. said the family totally understands IU wanting its new coach to have a chance to talk to them before a release is granted.
They still want to release to see what other schools want to recruit Durham — which can’t happen without a release — but plan to give Miller every chance to recruit Al, a 6-foot-4 guard from Berkmar, Ga.
“He reached out and said Al is priority and they want to keep him,” Al Durham Sr. told peegs.com. “He talked about his system, how he uses his guards.
“He called a few hours after they hired him. He said we’re going to be his first stop.”
Miller can meet with the Durhams because Al is a signee. There is a dead period around the Final Four.
The Durhams still like Indiana very much, but a player needs to know his coach is the family’s approach right now.
“He committed early, in 2015. He has almost a two-year relationship with (former) coach (Tom) Crean and (assistant) Chuck (Martin) and those guys who recruited him.
“If it’s Indiana, we’ll be there in June.
“Schools all over the place, we’ve gotten word they want to talk to us. They can’t do that yet until we get the letter (of release). We understand Indiana wants to wait and let him (Miller) talk to us first.”
