Elijah Rodgers

South Carolina CB looking forward to IU visit

South Carolina CB Elijah Rodgers will be in Bloomington today and tomorrow for an unofficial visit with Indiana football.

Defensive back Elijah Rodgers will be traveling up to Indiana today to get a closer look at the IU football program. Peegs.com spoke with the 6-foot-1, 160-pound cornerback from Blacksburg (S.C.) Blacksburg H.S. about why he is so excited for his trip to Bloomington.

Rodgers currently has offers from Indiana, Purdue, BYU, Cincinnati, Colorado State, East Carolina, Georgia Southern, Coastal Carolina and Bryant. He said that his connection to the IU coaching staff is strong.

“I have a great relationship with them,” he said about the Hoosiers. “They are recruiting me harder than any other school, and to me it is about being loyal to a school. They have put the most into me so I’m going to put the most back into them.”

The talented prospect has been communicating with three members of the Indiana coaching staff, including the head coach and the cornerbacks coach.

“I have been communicating with Coach (Scott) Gasper, Coach (Brandon) Shelby and Coach (Tom) Allen,” Rodgers said. “Coach Shelby is just a great guy. He is real about everything he says and he is straight up, and that is what I like about him.”

The Hoosiers have let Rodgers know how impressed they are with the physical gifts he brings to the cornerback spot.

“They have told me that they like my length and my athleticism at corner,” he said. “They also like my physicality.”

Rodgers will be in Bloomington today and tomorrow for his visit, and he said that while he is in town he would like to get to know the coaches and players better.

“I am really excited for this visit,” he said. “I can already tell they have a family type feel up there. I am just looking forward to meeting all the players and coaches.”

The South Carolina native already has an idea of what to expect when he is at IU after a close friend, Israel Mukuamu, visited Bloomington last weekend and told him about it.

“We talked about his visit after he was there,” Rodgers said about Mukuamu. “He said that he loved it. He said that he loved how the coaches interacted with him.”

Rodgers said that he and Mukuamu have talked about attending the same college, and he is hoping they can make it happen.

“It will be major if we can go to the same school,” Rodgers said. “We met a number of months ago and we just sort of rolled on from there. I keep up with him a lot and he keeps up with me. It would just be like going to school with a brother.”

Rodgers, who plans on deciding before the start of his senior season, said that the number one factor for him is finding a school where he can get a quality education.

“At the end of the day it’s about graduating,” he said. “I have always been a strong believer that at some point in life you have to stop playing sports, so I want to go to a school where I can get a good education. If it all possible I would like to have the chance to play early as well.”
