Defensive end Randy Charlton has picked up more than a dozen offers, including one from Indiana that he received just a few weeks back. The 6-foot-4, 222-pound standout from Miami (FL) Southridge H.S. spoke to Peegs.com about his interest in the IU program, and about where things stand with his recruiting at this time.
Charlton said that most of his communication has been with assistant coach Mark Hagen, and the message he is hearing from the Hoosiers is they are looking for difference-makers like him for the defensive line.
“I’ve been talking to Coach Hagen,” Charlton said. “He said they are looking for D-linemen that are game changers and he sees that in me. He also said that he believes I would be a good fit for their system.”
The three-star recruit said finding a school where he fits and where he has chance to be a significant contributor will be important to him.
“I am looking for a school where I have a chance to make an impact on their team,” he said. “I am also looking for a place where I fit in. academics will also be important for me. I want to major in criminal justice. Location isn’t a big deal to me. I am open to going anywhere.”
This past fall Charlton and his Southridge teammates had a great season as they went 12-2 and won the Class 8A State Championship in Florida.
“We won a state title so as a team we did great,” he said about his junior year. “The chemistry on the team was great and we had a lot of fun doing what we love to do, and then finishing it off with a state championship just made it that much better. Individually I felt like I had a great season, but there are always things you can do better.”
Besides the offer from Indiana, the Miami native also has offers from Indiana, Illinois, Nebraska, Baylor, Iowa State, Mississippi State, South Florida, Temple, Western Kentucky, Bowling Green, Central Florida, Florida Atlantic, Appalachian State and Illinois State. He said that one other factor that will play a part in his decision is the chance to attend the same school with one of his teammates.
“I haven’t really narrowed it down, but most of the schools I am looking at are ones that are also recruiting my teammate James Head,” Charlton said. “Me and him want to go to the same college and we’re hoping we can do that.”
Charlton, who plans on committing before his senior season, said Indiana is a school that has a chance with him and his teammate because they know IU would like to land both of them.
“We’re interested in them because they offered both of us,” Charlton said about Indiana’s chances with him and James Head.
