Ivy enjoyed his visit to Indiana

Three-star Chicago tight end T.J. Ivy was in Bloomington yesterday for an unofficial visit at IU.

The Indiana coaching staff hosted one of their top targets in the 2018 class yesterday when T.J. Ivy made the trip down to Bloomington for an unofficial visit. The 6-foot-5, 218-pound tight end from Marist H.S. in Chicago spoke to Peegs.com about why he is so high on the Hoosiers.

The three-star recruit really enjoyed his visit to IU, and he said a big reason for that is the relationship he has with the coaches.

“The visit was great,” Ivy said about his trip to Indiana yesterday. “I really like the coaching staff down there. Whenever I have been there I always feel pretty comfortable. No one is really uptight or anything like that.”

One of the coaches that Ivy has developed a good connection with is offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Mike DeBord.

“I love Coach DeBord,” the Chicago native said. “Me and him talk regularly, a couple times a week. I definitely have a good relationship with him. I really like him as a person and a coach.”

Coach DeBord and the Indiana coaches have told Ivy they see him as a tight end that can do different things in their offense.

“They think I would fit in well with their offense because they run a lot of the same things that we run here at my school,” he said when asked what the message has been from the IU staff. “They feel like they would do a great job of developing me as a player. They see me as a more of a hybrid tight end because I can split out wide as a receiver, and I can also play with my hand on the ground. They said that is how they would use me.”

One of Ivy’s teammates at Marist, Gavin McCabe, is also a top target for the Hoosiers. Ivy said that he and McCabe have talked attending the same college and how fun that would be.

“It would definitely be nice to go to the same school as him,” Ivy said when asked about him and McCabe both being IU targets. “Gavin and I have talked about the possibility of playing at the same school, so we’ll see what happens.”

Ivy wants to commit to a school before the start of the upcoming football season because he wants all his attention to be on his team this fall.

“I plan on committing before the start of my senior season,” he said. “I would like to get it out of the way so that I can focus on the season and on winning a state championship.”

The athletic tight end currently has offers from Indiana, Illinois, Purdue, Rutgers, Cincinnati, Iowa State, Syracuse, West Virginia, Ball State, Bowling Green, Colorado State, Miami (OH), Northern Illinois, Toledo, Western Michigan and Illinois State. Ivy said that he is getting closer to eliminating some schools for his list.

“I haven’t publicly narrowed it down, and even though I’m still considering everything, I will be narrowing it down pretty soon,” he said about his recruiting. “I don’t know if I will make a top list, but if there are schools I am not interested in I will let those coaches know.”

The Hoosiers are one program that does not have to worry about being on Ivy’s list of schools after he cuts it down.

“Indiana will make the list,” he said.
