Defensive back Jaylin Williams is one of several prospects from the state of Tennessee that the IU staff has extended an offer to. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound standout from Germantown (TN) Germantown H.S. plans on making a trip up to Bloomington later this month to get a closer look at the Hoosiers.
Williams has been hearing from Indiana assistant coach William Inge, who is the primary recruiter for his area. Coach Inge has expressed to Williams how much the coaching staff likes him as a player.
“They are recruiting me as a corner,” Williams said about the Hoosiers. “Coach Inge said that if I went there I would have a chance to play early if I came in and worked hard. He also said that the coaches like me because I can be a lockdown corner. He told me that it takes a special person to be that type of corner in the Big Ten, and they think I can be that guy.”
The three-star recruit admitted that he is not very knowledgeable about IU, but he is looking forward to learning more about them when he visits Bloomington later this month.
“I don’t know much about Indiana because I’ve never been there, but I will be going up there May 20th for a visit," he said. "I am really looking forward to learning more about them when I go up there. When I’m there I will be looking for a home away from home. I will also look at the academics because that is a big thing for me.”
One thing that Williams does know about the Hoosiers is that two of his friends are currently members of their 2018 recruiting class.
“I like Indiana,” he said. “Two of my friends are committed to Indiana, Elijah Rodgers and Cam Jones.”
This past fall Williams was a standout performer on both sides of the ball for a Germantown team that made it to the state playoffs.
“On defense as a corner I only gave up three catches all year,” he said. “I also played at receiver on offense and started six games there. I had 36 catches for 856 yards and 12 touchdowns. I think the biggest thing I improved on last year was my strength. Getting stronger was a really big thing for me.”
The Tennessee native currently has offers from Indiana, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, Virginia, Wake Forest, Washington State, Arkansas State, Ball State, Colorado State, Louisiana-Monroe, Middle Tennessee State, Toledo, UMass and Tennessee-Martin. He said that he is getting close to trimming his list down.
“I am starting to focus on certain number of schools,” Williams said about his recruiting. “I think after spring ball I will probably narrow my list down. I will probably my decision right before the start of my senior season, but it could happen during the season.”
