IU standing out for Florida QB Devin Black

Indiana is one of the top schools for three-star Florida QB Devin Black.

Indiana head coach Tom Allen has stated that he wants a quarterback that can extend plays with his legs, and with Florida QB prospect Devin Black that is exactly what you get. The 6-foot-2, 160-pound standout from Seffner (FL) Armwood H.S. spoke to Peegs.com about his recruiting, and about why the Hoosiers are one of his top schools.

Black currently has offers from Indiana, Louisville, Iowa, South Florida, Florida Atlantic and Tulane. He said IU is one of his top two schools along with Louisville because of academics and because of Coach Allen.

“First off, they have my major, which is business management, and it is highly ranked nationally,” he said about why he is so high on Indiana. “That is something that really got my attention. And then Tom Allen and the relationship I have with him. I have known him since he was at USF and it is almost like a dad type relationship. I love his enthusiasm and the way he interacts with his players. I just feel comfortable talking to him.”

The three-star recruit plans on making his first trip to Bloomington next month, and when he gets on campus he knows what he will be looking for.

“They have been talking to me about getting up there for a visit, and I plan on doing that in June,” Black said about a visit to IU. “I want to see what the environment is like, and I want it to feel like home. I also want to learn about the academics and what they have to offer. And making me feel important is also big.”

If Black were to play for the Hoosiers he would join a growing list of Tampa area prospects that are members of the Indiana program. He said that having other guys from his area does make IU a more attractive option for him.

“I know the three that are going there from Plant, Thomas Allen, Whop (Philyor) and Juwan (Burgess),” he said when asked if he knew any of the Tampa area players at Indiana. “I haven’t talked to them about Indiana, but I have a really good relationship with Juwan. It helps a lot that there are guys there from my area because I would be able to communicate with them and ask them what they think about Indiana.”

This spring the athletic quarterback said he is working hard to improve on reading defenses faster so that he knows exactly where to go with the ball.

“The biggest thing I have been working on is reading defenses quicker,” Black said. “I am trying to get better at noticing the coverages and knowing where to go with the ball.”

When it comes to his recruiting, the Florida native said that his list is not set in stone and it could change depending on what new interest he receives over the next few weeks.

“My top schools could change,” Black said. “By the end of May I should know who really wants me. These are my top schools from the offers I have right now.”

Black understands that he can’t wait too long as a quarterback to make his decision because spots for signal-callers in recruiting classes don’t stay open for long.

“I am not sure when I will commit,” he said about his decision timetable. “I haven’t talked to my parents about that, but my coaches have talked to me and my parents about it and they told us that committing early is what you want to do because commitments at the quarterback position go fast.”

Last fall Black threw for 1,770 yards with 20 touchdowns and only five interceptions, and he rushed for 846 yards and eight more scores for an Armwood team that went 10-2 and made it to the second round of the state playoffs.
