Hoosiers in great shape with McCabe

Illinois defensive lineman Gavin McCabe talks about his recruiting and recaps the visit he made to IU yesterday.

Illinois defensive lineman Gavin McCabe could be just days away from knowing where he will play his college football, and one of the schools that is standing out for him is Indiana. The 6-foot-3, 250-pound defensive lineman from Chicago Marist H.S. was down in Bloomington yesterday for an unofficial visit, and afterwards he spoke to Peegs.com about how it went.

McCabe said this visit to Indiana was not only an opportunity for him to learn a little more about the school and the program, it was also a chance for his mother to get some of her questions answered.

“My mom has only been down there once and that was for the spring game so we weren’t able to talk that much with Coach (Tom) Allen or see the campus,” he said. “We were able to do that, and I was also able to spend time with the strength staff which is not something I had been able to do before. That was a big thing because as a football player you spend most of your time with the strength staff. I was able to meet them and strike up a relationship with them.”

The three-star recruit said he and his mom came away very impressed with everything Indiana has to offer.

"What stood out to me was really the family atmosphere at Indiana,” McCabe said. “Everyone was so nice and really seemed like they wanted me. I really liked the campus. It was absolutely beautiful and I could really see myself attending IU. And my mom loved Indiana as well. She was very impressed with everything they had to offer, and she also really liked the family atmosphere and how nice the campus was. She was able to get all of her questions answered.”

McCabe had the chance to visit with Coach Allen and defensive line coach Mark Hagen, and he said his bond with both is very strong.

"I have a great relationship with both Coach Allen and Coach Hagen,” he said. “I talk to Coach Hagen weekly, and I also talk to Coach Allen pretty often. I really like them a lot and I feel very comfortable around them. I feel comfortable having conversations with them about football and about life. I have a close relationship with both of them and I really like that.”

McCabe has offers from Indiana, Illinois, Purdue, Rutgers, Arkansas, Boston College, Georgia Tech, Iowa State, Kansas, Syracuse, Texas Tech, Washington State, West Virginia, Cincinnati, Ball State, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Colorado State, Miami (OH), New Mexico, Northern Illinois, Toledo, Western Michigan, Wyoming, Illinois State and Yale. He said right now the plan is to make his commitment next week after taking one more visit this weekend.

I have been able to narrow down my schools to a final four or five,” McCabe said about his recruiting. “I don’t want to say who my top schools are, but I can say Indiana is on there. I will visit Iowa State on Saturday and after that I should be done with the schools I want to see. Hopefully after that I will be ready to make a decision because the hope is to decide by next week.”

When he does make his decision there is little doubt the Hoosiers will have an excellent shot to land his commitment.

“I think the Indiana program is one that is really turning around after going to back-to-back bowl games these past two years,” McCabe said. “I think this coaching staff, with the guys that Coach Allen has brought in, I really think they are going to be a team to be reckoned with in the Big Ten. The other thing about Indiana is the school part and it is something that I am looking for too, and Indiana has got that. They are very strong with me, and I absolutely love everything about them. I really feel like Indiana could be the right fit for me.”
