Winkel hoping for an offer from IU

Tennessee OL Ryan Winkel is hoping to land an offer from Indiana today when he participates in one of their one-day camps.

Ryan Winkel has around 20 offers but he is still looking for his first power five offer, and his hope is to get that offer today when he camps with the Hoosiers. The 6-foot-7, 281-pound offensive tackle from Christian Brothers H.S. in Memphis, Tennessee will be making his first trip to Bloomington today for a one-day camp at Indiana.

Winkel currently has offers from Arkansas State, Central Florida, Louisiana Tech, Louisiana-Monroe, Memphis, Tulane, UMass, Western Kentucky, Austin Peay, Coastal Carolina, Cornell, Eastern Kentucky, Illinois State, Jacksonville State, Southern Illinois, Tennessee Tech, Tennessee-Martin, Western Illinois and Yale. He is receiving strong interest from Indiana, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Tennessee, Vanderbilt. He said an offer from IU would be special for him.

“It would be huge to get an offer from Indiana,” he said. “It would obviously be my first power five offer, and there can only be a first for anything so it would mean a lot.”

The Hoosiers have been recruiting Winkel for since around April, and the coach he has been hearing from is O-line coach Darren Hiller.

“I have been hearing from them for about a month or two,” Winkel said. “I have been talking to Coach Hiller. He told me that he likes my size and my length and my athleticism. We have a pretty good relationship. We message back and forth quite a bit. He is always asking how I’m doing and how things are going in my life.”

Not only will the Memphis native camp with IU today, but he will also get a chance to visit a school he has heard so much about.

“I have heard from everyone that has ever been there that it is an absolutely beautiful place, so I am just looking forward to seeing it for myself,” he said about Indiana. “I have some coaches here that are friends with some of the coaches up there, and they have had nothing but great things to say about the coaches and the program. I am pumped to get up there and visit with them.”

Winkel said he is not exactly sure when he will make his decision, but he does have a good idea about what he is looking for in a school.

“I don’t have a timetable for when I will have my decision made, but I would like it to have it done before the season starts,” he said. “I would love to play power five football and I want to play for a great program. I am also looking for a school where I can get a great education. I want to study business management in college and Indiana has a great business school.”
