Hoosiers open Season with Indiana State Sycamores

Coach Mike Davis and his Indiana Hoosiers will take on the Indiana State Sycamores Tuesday night in Bloomington at Assembly Hall. The Sycamores are coached by Royce Waltman, who is in his eighth season in Terre Haute. Indiana State has already opened its season successfully with a win over Coastal Carolina. The Hoosiers will be starting their season a little late, as they come into the game with a pair of victories in exhibition games.

The Sycamores return one of their best players from 2003 in sophomore guard David Moss. Moss is joined by Juco-transfer Amani Daanish, who was picked as the Missouri Valley newcomer of the year. Daanish will add some post presense to a team that has been lacking good play down low for a few years now. The team also consists of returning starters Eric Gray and Tyson Schnitker. The Sycamores were 9-19 last year, but look to be improved this year.

Moss had 24 points in the opener against Coastal Carolina, and will be the main Indiana State scoring threat. Daanish just missed a double-double in the opener, pulling down eight rebounds while putting in 12 points of his own. The best stat for ISU from their season opening win was their 54.2 percent shooting percentage with 41.7% from behind the three point arc. If they shoot like that against Indiana, it could be a very tough game for the Hoosiers.

The Hoosiers are 15-4 all time against the Sycamores, but have oddly last their last 2 games by a combination of 4 points. The last meeting was in 2000 in Terre Haute when Indiana lost 58-59. Indiana has dominated all time, and ISU is in the middle of a few down seasons.

Indiana and Indiana State actually match up very well. The Hoosiers have little depth in the paint, as do the Sycamores. Both teams have a very good scoring threat; ISU has Moss whereas the Hoosiers have Bracey Wright. Both teams come into the season with a lot of question marks, and a lot of newcomers to the system. In the end though, the Hoosiers are the much more talented team, and should take the game. If DJ White can establish himself on the offensive side early, he could get Daanish in foul trouble, and the Sycamores have little else to replace him with.

Gametime is set for 6pm Tuesday night. The game will be televised locally on WTTV-4 through the ESPN+ network. If you live outside the local area, you can watch the game as part of the ESPN fullcourt package. The game will also be carried on the state-wide Indiana radio network.

Prediction: Hoosiers 76 Sycamores 64
