While he may be shocked to be receiving so many offers before his senior season, two-way lineman Brandon Hoey is not letting the awe rush him into making his decision.
"The offers so far are more than I ever would have imagined," said the 6'5", 265-pound lineman from Arden Hills (Minn.) Mounds View. "It started out as a bit of a shock, but now it has become really fun.
"I didn't realize that it started this early before your senior season. All of my brother's friends who got scholarships, they got them after their senior year, not before. It just seemed kind of surprising to be getting so many, so early."
The schools making early offers include Indiana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa State, Colorado, Wyoming and Central Florida, and Hoey insists he has not picked a favorite.
"All eight of the schools that offered me are still on my list. Nothing has stood out yet to make me want to choose," Hoey said. "I need to visit those schools a few more times and still see some more before I make my choice. You can't go off one visit. I want to get to know the place I'm going to go in more detail before I choose."
It's easy to see why Hoey is in such demand. While he's being recruited by most programs to play on the offensive line, many believe he also has the skills to play on the defensive side of the ball in college at either defensive tackle of defensive end. As a junior, Hoey tallied 12 sacks, 45 tackles and four forced fumbles while helping his team to a 7-3 record.
Hoey, ranked as one of the top 45 offensive tackles in the nation according to Scout.com's Craig Haubert, has visited Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa State, Northwestern and Nebraska. He has yet to travel to Indiana and says the Indiana coaches are yet to visit him officially.
"I've actually never been to Indiana," said Hoey. "I've talked to them on the phone, but I've never visited and they are yet to come to visit me. I'm definitely still interested in IU even though I haven't gone to visit and I'm trying to fit a visit into my schedule."
Hoey says he has little familiarity with the Indiana program, but is starting to make a bond with a few coaches on the IU staff.
"I am a little familiar with the Indiana program from seeing them on TV and I'm not too familiar with (Coach Hoeppner)," said Hoey. "I've been recruited so far by Coach (Matt) Canada. He seems like a down to earth kind of guy, but I don't really know yet. The three coaches that I have probably talked to the most are from Wisconsin, Iowa State and Minnesota. Those guys I have talked to a lot."
Hoey has decided to wait on his choice until he is comfortable and says location and conference are not going to be the deciding factor.
"I'm not sure when I'm going to make my decision," said Hoey. "It might be before the season starts. I'm not positive yet. In a way I would like to get it over with before the season starts to get it out of the way. Then I wouldn't have so much pressure on me when the season starts. But on the other hand, I don't want to commit to a place that I don't feel totally comfortable at either. Basically whenever it hits me, I'll go.
"I grew up watching the Big Ten, but I really don't have a favorite conference. Big Ten, Big 12, and the Mountain West are all good conferences. I wouldn't mind playing in any of them. Playing close to home really is going to affect my decision either."
