Decision Nearing For Stewart - Will It Be IU?

The Indiana coaching staff already has a couple of commits for the '06 class from Ohio - could Alex Stewart be the third?

While Terry Hoeppner no longer coaches in the state of Ohio, he is not quite ready to cut his recruiting ties in the state. This time he is after defensive tackle Alex Stewart from DeSales High School in Columbus, Ohio.

The 6-1, 259-pound Stewart already has an offer from Indiana and has the Hoosiers at the top of his list.

"I have five offers right now," said Stewart. "Indiana is the only Big Ten school that has offered me so far. My favorites are Indiana and Boston College, but everything Indiana has brought to the table has had the right feeling to it. It feels like the right step to me. They're at the top of my list right now."

Stewart has played on both sides of the ball in high school, but will most likely stick to the defensive side on the next level. As a junior Stewart recorded 72 tackles including 12 sacks at defensive tackle and also started at center on offense.

The chance to play for Indiana is one Stewart is excited about.

"Indiana is recruiting me for the defensive line and playing defense in the Big Ten would be a great experience for me," said Stewart. "I visited Indiana about three weeks ago and I loved it. The campus itself was really nice and the facilities looked great.

"I met Coach Hoeppner and he seemed like a really outgoing kind of guy. I could absolutely see myself playing for him. He is a very motivational guy and you need a leader like that in football."

The Ohio native said staying close to home is one of the most important factors in his decision and his decision could come early in his senior season.

"I don't really want to go far from home," said Stewart. "When I was making my list I decided I wouldn't want to pick a school that wasn't adjacent to Ohio and I wanted to stay in the state if possible.

"I'm looking to make my decision about three weeks into the season, sometime early in the season. I have some schools that want to see my first couple of games and I'm going to wait to hear from them before I make my decision. Northwestern, Boston College and Wisconsin all want to see my game tapes from early in the season." Top Stories
