Friday Night Sites

Catch up on what IU's eight verbal football commits did in Friday night's games.

Ben Chappell, QB Bloomington (Ind.) High School South – Chappell had a hand in all four touchdowns as Bloomington South (3-0) cruised to a 28-10 win over rival Bloomington North. Chappell completed 10-of-18 passes for 241 yards and a pair of touchdowns and also carried the ball eight times for 53 yards and a pair of scores. South had its biggest offensive outburst of the season, piling up 541 yards of total offense in the victory.

Jeff Sanders, TE Springfield (Ill.) Sacred Heart Griffin H.S. – For the second time in three weeks, SHG will play a Saturday night contest instead of the traditional Friday night matchup. Sanders' squad will face Jacksonville (Ill.) H.S. tonight. A traditional state power, SHG is looking to avenge a second-round state tournament loss to Jacksonville from two years ago. SHG (2-0) is ranked No. 3 in the latest Class 5A poll, trailing Geneseo and Rochelle.

Matt Mayberry, OLB/FBHinsdale (Ill.) South H.S. – Hinsdale Central's Andrew Hubbarth kicked a 24-yard field goal on the game's opening drive, and that was all the scoring on the night as fifth-ranked Central handed Mayberry's Hinsdale South (2-1) squad a 3-0 setback in a cross-city showdown. Mayberry carried 25 times for 127 yards in the game, but South still couldn't put any points on the board. South did get to the Central one-yard line in the first half, but Mayberry was stopped at the 3 on a fourth-down play.

Alex Perry, OT – Morris (Ill.) – Once again it was the running game that keyed second-ranked Morris H.S. (3-0), as it rolled to a 42-7 victory over Lemont. Often running behind Perry, tailback John Dergo rushed for a school-record 376 yards, including touchdown runs of 3, 35, 67 and 88 yards. Entering the game, Lemont (2-1) was surrendering just 1.6 yards/carry.

Mike Stark, OL – Platteville (Wis.). Platteville (3-0) picked up its third straight to open the season, knocking off Dodgeville, 31-6.

Pete Saxon, IL – Plain City (Ohio) Jonathan Alder H.S. (3-0) won its third in a row, knocking of Westerville Central, 34-28. The 6-6, 305-pound Saxon is playing on both sides of the ball, although he's expected to play offensive tackle in college.

Brad Martin, TE – Marion (Ohio) Pleasant H.S. (1-2) dropped a 35-14 decision to cross-city rival Marion Elgin Friday night.

Jarrod Smith, OL – Fairborn (Ohio). Fairborn (0-3) dropped its third straight, falling to Valley View H.S. 47-20. Valley View jumped out to leads of 21-0 at the end of the first quarter and 34-7 at halftime and cruised to the easy victory. Top Stories
