CHICAGO, Ill. - Indiana's D.J. White was named to the Preseason All-Big Ten team, and the Hoosiers were picked as one of the preseason favorites at the Big Ten Basketball Tip-Off Luncheon Sunday.
The 6-9, 230-pound White was joined on the Big Ten's Preseason All-Conference squad by Illinois' Dee Brown, Michigan State's Paul Davis, Minnesota's Vincent Grier and Wisconsin's Alando Tucker. Brown, the 2005 Big Ten Player of the Year, was tabbed as the league's 2005-06 preseason Player of the Year as well.
Michigan State, meanwhile, was the media's preseason pick to win the Big Ten title. Coach Tom Izzo's squad was followed by Illinois and Indiana. The Big Ten releases only the top three teams in the media balloting.
Michigan State returns four starters and three of its four leading scorers from a team that went 26-7 a year ago and advanced to the Final Four. Illinois, meanwhile, was also a Final Four team a year ago. Coach Bruce Weber's squad went 37-2 in 2004-05 and advanced to the NCAA Championship game, where it fell to North Carolina.
Indiana is coming off a 15-14 season and has to replace the league's leading scorer from a year ago, Bracey Wright. But the emergence of White, coupled with the debut of Auburn transfers Marco Killingsworth and Lewis Monroe, has many expecting the Hoosiers to contend for their first Big Ten title since 2002.
HoosierNation.com will have additional coverage from today's Big Ten Tip-Off Luncheon later today.
