BLOOMINGTON-It's been 24 hours since D.J. White left IU's exhibition opener with a foot injury, and on Saturday IU Coach Mike Davis said there's hope the injury isn't as serious as originally thought.
Reports circulated Saturday night that White has suffered a stress fracture to his left foot and that he'd be sidelined for 6-8 weeks, but Davis said x-rays haven't necessarily supported that theory.
"Hopefully, D.J. comes back in a week or so," Davis said.
Davis said that x-rays didn't definitively reveal that there was a stress fracture and that an MRI would give the Indiana medical staff a better idea about the injury. White left Friday night's exhibition game against St. Joseph's with pain in his foot, and told Davis he wasn't exactly sure when he suffered the injury.
"We watched the film this morning and he had no idea how it happened," Davis said. "He didn't step on anybody's foot, he just said it started giving him pain."
Davis said more will be known Monday, presumably after the staff gets the results back from an MRI.
While there's more optimism in the IU camp about White's return, Davis said he's been told that the team's leading returning scorer will be out for at least a couple of weeks.
"The minimum is a couple of weeks for sure," said Davis. "It's just like (A.J.) Ratliff, we have no idea how long he is out."
Ratliff suffered a broken thump in practice two weeks ago, an injury that required surgery and has the 6-2, 185-pound sophomore in a cast.
White's absence will be a big blow to an IU frontcourt that Davis believes can be the best in the country. In IU's 93-65 win over St. Joseph's, White scored 13 points in 11 minutes before leaving with the injury, while senior Marco Killingsworth scored a team-high 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting in 19 minutes.
"He and Marco are a deadly combination," said Davis. "I have always said from day one that I thought they were the best two bigs in the country. Not just the conference, but in the country.
"To have him go down…hopefully he is not out long."
