BLOOMINGTON-Darrell Arthur has decided to wait to sign a national letter of intent until the spring, and that could be very good news for Indiana and Coach Mike Davis.
Arthur's AAU coach, Jazzy Hartwell, told HoosierNation.com Thursday that the 6-9, 215-pounder from South Oak Cliff H.S. won't sign during this week's early signing period and will instead wait until the April signing period to make his college choice.
"That's what (Darrell) decided after the last visit," said Hartwell. "He wants to wait and see where the coaches are going to be."
What Arthur is likely waiting on is to see if Davis will be back on the sidelines next fall for the Hoosiers. There's been plenty of speculation about Davis' job security following back-to-back sub-par seasons, and it's widely believed Davis needs to get Indiana back into Big Ten title contention and then make a run in the NCAA Tournament to be back next season.
Arthur's decision to wait, meanwhile, suggests that Scout.com's 12th-ranked player is very much interested in playing at IU – so long as Davis is still around the coach him.
"That's probably the No. 1 topic he's concerned with," said Hartwell. "He and his mom called Coach Davis, and they asked if he's going to be there. He doesn't want to make a commitment to somewhere and then not have coach be there.
"A kid like Darrell, they're not going to let him out (of his national letter of intent). Once he makes a commitment, he's not going to be able to get out of it."
Arthur's interest in the Indiana program appears to be very much a result of his affinity for Davis. Arthur visited the Bloomington campus in September, and Hartwell said that the player and coach immediately hit it off.
"Coach Davis is kind of laid back like me," said Hartwell, who has been involved with Arthur since he was a youth. "When Darrell visited with him, he made him feel like he was at home – that comfort zone."
Hartwell said that he's already getting calls from new programs who are looking to get involved with Arthur now that word has gotten out that he's going to wait until the spring. But Hartwell said Arthur's choice will come down the five he has been considering – Indiana, Kansas, Baylor, SMU and Texas.
"We're not going to (open it back up)," said Hartwell. "It would be a zoo.
"I've gotten calls already. People think he's not happy with the schools he's chosen. That's not the case. He really likes Indiana and Kansas. He likes all of them, but I know he really likes those two, and I know he really likes Coach Davis."
Arthur is coming off a standout junior season. He averaged 22 points, 17 rebounds and five blocks per game for South Oak Cliff H.S., leading the team to the Texas Class 4A state championship.
