Davis Talks Up Michigan

IU Coach Mike Davis talks about Tuesday's Big Ten opener against Michigan, which is off to its best start since 1992-93 at 10-1...

Thoughts on Michigan
I think Tommy (Amaker) has done a great job with them. I think this is the first time he's had his full team together. Every year somebody is out. He's always had somebody out and this is the first time he's been able to play up to this point and had nobody out. They finished the nonconference at 10-1 so it's going to be a tough game. We've watched them and it's going to be the best team that we've played other than Duke. It's definitely going to be a challenge for us.

Is Indiana finally healthy… We are. We need more game for D.J. (White). He asked to come out in the second half (against Ball State) two minutes into the second half so he was really, really tired. His conditioning is nowhere near where it needs to be. I think he's going to need more games under his belt because the intensity goes up in Big Ten play.

Will the first four Big Ten games give you an idea where this team is at…
Not really. We've jumped out to 4-1 before and ended up with the bottom falling out. We just want to take it one game and try to get better every game. There are about eight teams in our league that can end this deal. So if that's the case there will be nights where there are more road games won than ever before and there will be nights when it's tough to win any road games. It can go either way so there won't be nights where you can walk into the gym and say this team is going to win. It's going to be tough.

Where is D.J.'s confidence…
It's coming. He's still a little rusty but he's averaging more rebounds now than he's ever averaged for the minutes he's played. If he can continue to rebound the basketball and take good shots it won't take long until his confidence is back.

Is Lewis Monroe ok…
He's fine. Tim (Garl) has some miracle pills back there that he gave him.

What has impressed you about Courtney Sims and Michigan's post play…
Every time he gets it he scores. I'm not sure what he's shooting from the field, but I know it's pretty high. He's good and he has been the last two years but they're going to him more than they did before. Last year they went away from him a lot but now they're looking for him a lot.

Did you have to talk to Marco after the Ball State game…
Marco knows when he's wrong and he's right so I told him he can't make up for a play by fouling. The play is over so go play defense. I think he needs to be stronger with the ball because that is causing most of his turnovers. He's never had to face the double team this much so all this is new to him and he's getting better everyday.

With the tougher big men in conference play do you expect more play out of Ben Allen and Cem Dinc
That all depends. We are playing against bigger guys now, but it's down to a 16-game season right now. I think both of those guys can play well in this environment, especially with Ben and the way he can shoot the ball. But the big guys we are playing against are very good. So not only are they bigger but they're a lot better than what they've seen.

How do you feel about your record now compared with your record last season going into Big Ten play…
Last year's schedule was too hard for our personnel. We just hoped to be .500 and to be 6-5, we would have been very happy. We knew coming in this season we had a chance to be 9-1 or 8-2 and if everything went our way, possibly undefeated. But with D.J. and Ratliff going out that put a stop to that. You always want to look at your schedule and say we should be here and we're exactly where we want to be. Last year we were where we wanted to be except for one game. You can look at the Charlotte game and the Missouri game for that. You look at your schedule and figure who you should beat and I think we're right where we wanted to be other than the game at Indiana State.
