IU athletic department officials confirmed Tuesday that freshman Matt Lewis has been granted his release from his scholarship and has left the IU football program.
The 6-2, 245-pound linebacker from Daytona Beach, Fla., arrived in Bloomington last fall as the most celebrated recruit in Indiana's 2005 recruiting class, but wound up being redshirted along with the majority of the '05 recruiting class. The Mainland H.S. graduate was slowed from the outset when he arrived at fall camp out of shape, and then suffered a knee injury during camp that sidelined him periodically throughout the fall.
As a senior at Mainland H.S. Lewis earned second-team All-state honors after totaling 100 tackles and 13 sacks while playing defensive end, defensive tackle and linebacker. He was ranked as one of the top 25 players in the state.
There are no reports on where Lewis plans to transfer.
