Word on Mike Davis' resignation has reached Huntsville, Ala., and IU signee Xavier Keeling. What impact does Davis' decision have Keeling's desire to come to Bloomington?
The 6-6, 220-pounder from J.O. Johnson H.S. said he expects to talk to IU Coach Mike Davis tonight, but he suspects that ultimately he'll still want to play basketball for the Hoosiers in the fall.
"I feel like I'll be loyal to Indiana, but as of right now I don't know what's going to happen," said Keeling.
The challenging part for Keeling – much like IU's current players – is the fact that he says that Davis was the biggest reason that he picked Indiana in the first place. With his departure, Keeling has no guarantees about how the future coach envisions using him.
"I committed to Indiana because of my relationship with Coach Davis," said Keeling. "But I haven't been able to keep in touch with him lately because every time they had a game, we had a game."
While Davis' decision to leave was a surprise to Keeling, he said that he's long heard rumors about him potentially leaving. In fact, when he was being recruited by other schools, it was something that opposing coaches constantly brought up.
"When I was recruited, people I talked to used to throw that at me," said Keeling. "He might not be there, but I wasn't concerned. I loved Indiana. It was the relationship I had with Coach Davis that made me commit, but I loved Indiana."
Keeling is also aware of coaches pointing out to other recruits as well that Davis' job was in jeopardy. In fact, Keeling said that others have told him that uncertainty led them to look in other directions.
"Some of the players that went to other schools told me before that they didn't go to IU because Coach Davis might not be there if he doesn't win enough games every season," said Keeling.
Ultimately, Indiana didn't win enough games. Keeling, who has known IU sophomore D.J. White from summer AAU basketball, said it's obvious White's absence hurt the Hoosiers this winter.
"I watched a couple of games," said Keeling. "I think they're doing well without (D.J. White), but you can tell they need him. I think it was harder on Coach Davis without him. They would've had two big-time post players and that would have made things a lot easier."
