BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – According to a published report, someone is interested in Iowa Coach Steve Alford, but it's not Indiana.
Citing unnamed sources, ESPN.com's Andy Katz reported that Indiana's search committee plans to bring in two candidates for its coaching vacancy, and as of Tuesday Alford wasn't one of them. Instead, ESPN.com and the Des Moines Register reported that Missouri plans to have the former IU All-American in for an interview this week to discuss its opening.
Alford recently completed his seventh year in Iowa City, his most successful since taking over for Tom Davis. Iowa went 25-9 overall and finished second in the Big Ten with an 11-5 mark. Iowa went on to win the Big Ten postseason tournament title and earn a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament, but it was upset by Northwestern State in the opening round.
Alford has compiled a 135-92 record at Iowa, but his teams have gone just 52-60 in Big Ten play. He's captured a pair of Big Ten Tournament titles (2001, 2006) and earned three trips to the NCAA Tournament (2001, 2005, 2006).
Many suspected that Alford would be the top candidate for the IU job once Mike Davis announced his decision to step down at season's end. But Tuesday's report appears to indicate Alford isn't being seriously considered by IU Athletics Director Rick Greenspan.
Missouri, meanwhile, is looking for a replacement for Quin Snyder, who stepped down during the season.
