Bloomington, Ind. – There hasn't been any public announcements about whether Robert Vaden is staying or going, but Kelvin Sampson said Friday he's got a good feel for what the 6'5" sophomore's intentions are.
"I've talked to Robert, and he has a tremendous, tremendous trust factor and a love for Mike (Davis), and I don't know that there's anything wrong with that," Sampson said. "That's the way he feels. (Vaden) doesn't know me and I don't know him, but I got the impression that his mind up."
Ever since Davis announced his decision to step down as Indiana's head coach in February, Vaden has expressed an interest in transferring from IU in the off-season, most likely to wherever Davis wound up. Once Davis was named the head coach at UAB earlier this month, speculation continued that the Hoosiers' second-leading scorer and rebounder from 2005-06 would be joining Davis in Birmingham.
Since Sampson has arrived, Vaden hasn't been participating in the team's off-season conditioning workouts, which added further evidence that the Indianapolis, Ind., product wouldn't be back in the fall.
Sampson said that in his conversations with Vaden, he's told him he'd welcome his return, but ultimately he needed to decide what was best for him in the long run.
"He's welcome to stay," Sampson said. "I'd give Robert an opportunity. But kids should do what's best for them. We often worry about or try to think too much about the perfect scenario, instead of other people's feelings or maybe what's best for them.
"I told Robert he should do what's best for him. If he thinks staying here would be good for him, and this is what he'd like to do, we'd like to have him. But if he felt he'd be better of going to another school, I wasn't going to stand in his way."
