Former Hoosier guard Lewis Monroe was involved in an altercation outside a Bloomington bar earlier this month and is being held in the Monroe County Jail on a misdemeanor battery charge.
According to police reports, the 24-year-old Monroe allegedly assaulted a 22-year-old man outside of Kilroy's Sports Bar on Walnut Street April 7. A security guard at the bar told police the alleged victim had made statements in the bar about how poorly he believed the IU basketball team had performed this year, resulting in an altercation between Monroe and the alleged victim. The security officer said Monroe struck the 22-year-old in the head and knocked him to the ground.
The alleged victim, though, told police that he had been waiting outside the bar for a ride when a group of men approached him and began calling him names. That incident allegedly led to a verbal confrontation with an unnamed person who the alleged victim said was an IU basketball player.
According to the report, when the alleged victim tried to leave, someone hit him in the jaw and he lost consciousness momentarily. The victim's cousin told police it was Monroe who hit him.
After Monroe failed to show up at the police station to provide further information about the incident, a warrant was issued for his arrest Tuesday on the misdemeanor battery charge. Monroe was booked into the Monroe County Jail Wednesday and was held on a $5,500 surety or $500 cash bond.
