IU Gets In Early With Merriweather

IU Coach Terry Hoeppner hopes that his early interest in St. Louis' Thomas Merriweather will pay off when it comes time for the standout tailback to make a college decision.

Even with seven running backs already on his roster, Indiana head coach Terry Hoeppner is looking to add more depth and talent to the position. This time he is looking at Thomas Merriweather, a 5-11, 190-pound bruiser from Hazelwood East H.S. in St. Louis.

With a year and a half of starting experience, Merriweather will be spending this summer getting ready for what should be his best season of high school football yet.

"I'm very excited about my senior year," said Merriweather. "I think my numbers will only get better.

"I'm going to work out a lot this summer and I plan on going to a couple of camps, too. I still haven't decided which ones I want to go to but I think it's going to be Iowa and Indiana."

Merriweather already has six offers on his table and a strong senior campaign should only add to that number, especially if he can top the 1,421 yards and 25 touchdowns he picked up as a junior.

"I have six offers right now, Indiana, Mizzou, Nebraska, Colorado, Illinois and Kansas State," said Merriweather. "So far I have only gone to see Iowa's spring game, but they haven't offered yet.

"I'm getting attention from Michigan State and Iowa, but they both are kind of waiting to see how my summer goes before they offer. Iowa wants to evaluate me in person. I don't talk to Michigan State that much right now."

Opting to play in the Big Ten seems like a decent possibility for Merriweather, with four conference schools already showing him attention. Indiana offered him early, something that could help down the road.

"Indiana offered me a while ago," said Merriweather. "They gave me a written letter and (quarterback's coach Matt) Canada told me about it himself.

"I really don't know that much about Indiana. I talk to Coach Canada a bit. I'd like to visit Indiana and I might try to make it to one of their summer camps. I've been talking to Coach Canada probably since right after football season ended. He came to my school this week, but I didn't get to talk to him much."

The season may be far off for Merriweather, but is already starting to narrow down the criteria he will use to determine a school and starting to build his list before the summer approaches.

"I'm going to spend my summer getting to know the coaches at the different schools and look at what they have done in the past," he said. "That's what is going to be important to me.

"I've started to begin a list. I'm not ranking the teams yet, but I'm writing down what I like about each school and we'll go from there."
