Bloomington, Ind. – If any doubt remained about the future of Cem Dinc in an Indiana uniform, that was all but put to rest Wednesday.
IU Coach Kelvin Sampson said he has never spoken with the 6-10, 240-pounder, and he doesn't anticipate having him on the roster next season.
"I've never talked to him," Sampson said Wednesday. "I'm not planning on him coming back, and more importantly, I don't believe he is, either."
The 6-10, 240-pound Dinc surprised many when he declared for the NBA Draft last month. The prospects of him being selected in the June 28th draft, though, appear extremely remote after a freshman season that included only three games, three points, and 12 minutes of action.
Assuming Dinc doesn't hire an agent, he would be permitted by NCAA rules to return to Indiana in the fall if he wasn't drafted, and Dinc was quoted in the Indianapolis Star this spring saying that he hasn't shut the door on being back at IU in the fall.
But the new IU coach hasn't talked to him since his arrival, and assistant coach Jeff Meyer said Wednesday he's placed several calls to Dinc since joining Sampson's staff, and they have gone unreturned. That suggests Dinc had no interest in returning, whether he is drafted or not.
Indications are that Dinc left Bloomington soon after the 2005-06 season ended and returned to Europe. It's unclear whether or not he's been working on his second semester coursework, a fact that could come into play with the NCAA's new academic guidelines.
