According to published reports, IU Coach Kelvin Sampson has added one final piece to the Hoosiers' puzzle for the 2006-07 season.
The Indianapolis Star reported Friday that Phil Jones, a 6-10 1/2, 245-pound center from Queens, N.Y., has verbally committed to the Hoosiers. Jones, who made his official visit to Indiana two weeks ago, picked the Hoosiers over Kentucky and Cincinnati.
Jones is the nation's 15th-ranked center in the 2006 class according to Scout.com and averaged 16 points and eight rebounds this past season at Laurinburg (N.C.) Prep. He has yet to sign his national letter of intent, but is expected to do so during the spring signing period.
Jones is the third frontcourt signee for Sampson this spring, joining 6-6 Tyler J.C. forward Mike White and 6-8 Southwestern Illinois College forward Lance Stemler. Laurinburg Prep Coach Billy Reid said the Hoosiers are getting a player can make an impact quickly.
"He's a really good scorer," said Reid. "He has a very good court presence. He can do it all – he's an inside-outside guy. He can score on the low block and can score outside as well."
