Bloomington, Ind. – After Patrick Witt's one-day stop in Bloomington, the Indiana coaching staff is hoping the 6-4, 210-pound Texas quarterback will be coming back to town in the not-too-distant future.
With an Indiana scholarship offer already in hand, the Wylie, Texas, product made an unofficial visit to the IU campus Sunday. It was the first of three unofficials he has planned to Big Ten schools this week, followed by Purdue Monday and Wisconsin Thursday.
"I got to see the facilities, the campus and I really loved it," Witt said. "It was great."
Indiana, Purdue and Wisconsin are three of growing list of programs that have offered scholarships this spring. He's also been offered by Texas Tech, Baylor, Tulane, Tulsa and UTEP, and he's made unofficial visits to Baylor, Texas Tech, Texas A&M and Oklahoma, among others.
His recently-completed trip to Bloomington, meanwhile, made a big impression.
"All the schools that have offered me are great schools and they have their pros and cons," Witt said. "But after visiting Indiana (Sunday), Indiana is right at the top. I really loved my visit. The visit today only moved Indiana up."
Formerly from Lilburn, Ga., Witt moved to Wylie, Texas, after his junior season. IU assistant coach Mike Yeager originally began recruiting Witt while he was throwing for more than 1,000 yards and 12 touchdowns at the Georgia high school. Once he moved to Texas the Hoosiers continued their pursuit of the signal caller.
"I'm sure some colleges may have lost me in the move, but the ones that have offered me and the ones that have kept up with me are really the schools that I'm excited about and am really considering," Witt said.
That's what prompted Sunday's unofficial visit to Bloomington, one that included an opportunity to sit down with IU Coach Terry Hoeppner as well as IU quarterbacks coach Matt Canada.
"The offense is great, they are going to showcase the quarterback, and as long as Coach Hep is there they are dedicated to throwing the football," Witt said. "They stressed how I'd really like it there, and how all the players love playing for Coach Hep, that he's a great guy. I really got that same feeling. I really, really enjoyed talking with him.
"With the support that I see with the fans coming around with Coach Hep there and the coaching staff there, I get a really good sense that things are taking a turn for the better and they are on the rise."
If all goes according to plan, Witt said he'd like to have his decision made early. And whichever program gets a commitment from Witt will likely get a player who will be enrolling in January.
"I have made the decision to graduate early, so my window for making a decision is shortened by that," Witt said. "It's a decision that I'd like to have made before the start of my senior season. Is that going to happen? I don't know. But that would be the opportune time for me."
