Wilmont Keys Big Ten Team's Win

IU senior Rod Wilmont has been the first player off the bench in the Big Ten Foreign Tour Team's first two contests in Australia, and he played a big role in the squad's first victory of the trip Sunday.

Hoosier senior guard Rod Wilmont is fulfilling a familiar while playing with the Big Ten Foreign Tour team in Australia.

Wimont has been the first player off the bench of the Big Ten team's first two contests, averaging 8.5 points and 10 rebounds. The Tommy Amaker-coached team began its tour with a 117-91 loss to the West Sydney Razorbacks Aug. 12, but followed that up with a 97-89 victory over the Sydney Kings Basketball Club Sunday.

Wilmont was a key in the Sunday win, contributing 15 points and eight rebounds. He was one of five Big Ten players in double figures, joining Michigan's Lester Abram (18), Ohio State's Ron Lewis (16), Illinois' Marcus Arnold (12) and Northwestern's Tim Doyle (10).

"I am really proud of these guys," said Foreign Tour head coach Tommy Amaker (Michigan). "The team bounced back after showing some jitters in their first game yesterday. They played great defense and what really made the difference in tonight's game was that this team was 22-of-28 from the free throw line, which helped us offensively."

The Sunday win came on the heels of a disappointing debut Saturday, as the West Sydney Razorbacks routed the Big Ten squad, 117-91. Wilmont contributed 12 rebounds off the bench, but was just 1-of-5 from the field, including 0-of-4 from 3-point range, and was held to two points. Arnold (18 points, 7 rebounds) and Lewis (16 points, 4-of-16 shooting) led the team in scoring. As a team, the Big Ten squad was just 4-of-34 from 3-point range in the contest, making them 8-of-53 in the two contests from deep.

Through two games Lewis leads the team in scoring (16.0/game), but is just 10-of-31 from the field in the two contests. Arnold ranks second in scoring (15.0/game) and is averaging 8.5 rebounds. Abram (13.5/game) is also averaging double figures, while Minnesota's Jonathon Williams leads the team in rebound with 11.0/game.

The team returns to action Tuesday, Aug. 15, with a contest against the Brisbane Bullets, and then conclude the trip with an Aug. 16 matchup against the South District Spartans.
