This weekend marks the first of a handful of very important weeks for the IU football program.
Coach Terry Hoeppner's program will welcome 11 players to town for official visits this weekend, the first of three such weekends this month. This weekend's group includes six players who have already verballed to the Hoosiers (Dennis Ziegler, Teddy Schell, Sidney Glover, Matt Ernest, Zach Walker and Andrew McDonald), but five more who have scholarship offers from the program.
With a little more than two months until the Feb. 7 signing date, Indiana is already well on its way to putting together its 2007 class. The Hoosiers have 11 verbals to date, and Hoeppner said they plan to sign between 18-20 players in the class.
So who are some of the new names and faces who will be in town this weekend? HoosierNation.com takes a look at the five uncommitted players who are in town this weekend:
Chris Hagerup – P/K/QB – This 6-4, 197-pounder from Whitefish Bay, Wis., was in Bloomington over the summer for the Hoosiers' summer camp he's a multi-talented player who is being looked at first and foremost for his ability to punt and kick. Indiana needs a punter to replace Tyson Beattie in 2007, and Hagerup appears to be their first choice, based on the fact they offered him a scholarship in October. But Hagerup is more than just a specialist, as evidenced by the fact he has been getting looks by Midwest programs for his quarterbacking abilities as well. He earned honorable mention all-state accolades as a punter this fall and is considered one of the top 10-15 punters in the class.
Josh Hager – OL – A 6-8, 275-pound offensive tackle from St. Louis' McCluer North H.S., Hager is the 10th-ranked senior in St. Louis and the area's second-best senior offensive lineman according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He has long arms, is athletic and is expected to fill out and easily get over 300 pounds once he's in college, so he fits the mold of many of the linemen IU has brought in under Hoeppner. Indiana has offered a scholarship to Hager, who helped lead McCluer North to an 11-1 season this fall and an appearance in the semifinals of the state playoffs.
Mark Jackson – OL – Another big offensive lineman at 6-5 and 290 pounds, Jackson prepped at Columbus, Ohio's Brookhaven H.S., before enrolling at Cincinnati's Harmony Prep this fall to get his academics in order. He's now fully qualified and is a potential January recruit as well. Among the other programs he's considering are Illinois, Ohio State, West Virginia and South Florida, among others. A center at Brookhaven who moved to tackle this fall, Jackson was getting Big Ten interest a year ago before enrolling in prep school.
Chris Rucker – CB – This 6-1, 185-pound cornerback has been on IU's list for sometime, and he's one of two Warren (Ohio) Harding H.S. standouts in town this weekend along with safety Sidney Glover, who pledged to IU over the summer. Rucker is a big cornerback with 4.5 speed in the 40, and cornerback remains a position of need for the Hoosiers with this year's recruiting class. Rucker also played wide receiver at Harding, but is being recruited for his skills in the secondary. Harding went 9-4 this season advanced to the regional final (state quarterfinals) this season before losing to Mentor H.S., 34-24.
Jarrell Drane – DB – A 6-1, 170-pound defensive back, Drane is a high school teammate of IU-bound running back Zack Walker at Plantation (Fla.) H.S. He has 4.6 speed and played safety in high school.
