Bloomington, Ind. – The battle is on for Dominique Battle.
The 6-0, 172-pounder from American Heritage H.S. in Boca Raton, Fla., has seven scholarship offers to date, including one from Indiana. The Hoosiers have offered Battle as a cornerback along with Purdue, Army, Cincinnati, Buffalo and Florida International, while Syracuse has offered Battle as a wide receiver.
It's a recruiting tug-of-war that figures to remain hotly contested until the fall.
"Right now, I'm taking everything in," Battle said. "I'm hoping to make my decision in the middle of the season."
While a decision doesn't appear to be in the offing anytime soon, the Hoosiers do appear well positioned with Battle. Despite the fact he's from Florida, both of his parents are Ohio State graduates so he has ties to the Midwest.
He also has an affinity for the Big Ten that could pay off as well.
"I grew up a Big Ten fan," Battle said. "I would love to play in the Big Ten. With the tradition it has, it's the best conference."
Indiana and Purdue are the two Big Ten schools that have offered thus far. The Hoosiers have made an impression with not only the opportunity to help out in the secondary, but also with the turnaround the program has made during the last couple of seasons.
"I'm interested in Indiana, because they are an improving team in the Big Ten – they finished sixth last year," Battle said. "I feel like I'd have a chance to play early there and help them out."
Battle is coming off a solid junior season, having totaled 60 tackles and three interceptions (one of which he returned for a touchdown) on defense while catching 19 passes for 353 yards and two touchdowns on offense. He combines that sort of productivity with 4.6 speed in the 40 and good size for the position as well.
"Coaches like my hip movement and my recovery speed," Battle said. "And I'm also someone who goes up and gets the ball. I'm a playmaker."
