IU athletic department officials have confirmed that Terry Hoeppner passed away this morning at 6:50 a.m. at Bloomington Hospital.
Hoeppner was 59 years old.
The Hoosier football coach had been battling a brain tumor that was originally diagnosed in December 2006. He is survived by his wife, Jane; three children - Drew, Amy (Fox) and Allison (Balcam); and four grandchildren.
During his two years in Bloomington, Hoeppner guided a resurgence in the program that nearly resulted in IU's first bowl appearance since 1993 last fall. His two IU teams went a combined 9-14, including a 5-7 mark last season. Last year's Hoosier squad posts wins over Big Ten foes Iowa, Michigan State and Illinois, and the five wins were the most for an IU team since 2001.
A native of Woodburn, Ind., and a graduate of Franklin (Ind.) College, Hoeppner was named IU's head coach on Dec. 17, 2004, after a 19-year run at Miami (Ohio) University. After spending 13 years as an assistant coach on the RedHawks staff, he spent six years as the program's head coach from 1999-04.
During those six season, Miami went 48-25 and finished in the top three in the MAC's East Division each season. Miami's 2003 squad won the MAC and GMAC Bowl championships and finished the season ranked No. 10 in the final AP poll.
IU is expected to issue an official statement on Hoeppner later today.
