12 – CONSECUTIVE three-and-outs for Akron during one stretch of its 20-2 loss to Ohio State last weekend. After putting together a seven-play, 34-yard drive on its opening possession, the Zips didn't muster another first down until its final drive of the day. Akron's offensive production was anemic across the board – three first downs, three rushing yards, 69 total yards and zero points. Akron's quarterbacks actually completed 17-of-32 passes, but the Zips relied exclusively on underneath routes. It's longest completion was 16 yards, and 14 of the 16 completions were for less than 10 yards. Akron was better against Army in the season opener, managing 287 yards in a 22-14 win, but the Zips are still ranked 116th out of 119 Division I programs in total offense with 178 yards/game.
4 – different defensive categories IU ranks in the top 10 nationally. Following wins against Indiana State and Western Michigan, the Hoosiers are ranked first in sacks (6.5/game), sixth in tackles for loss (10.0/game), sixth in rushing defense (38.0 yards/game) and seventh in turnover margin (+2.5/game). Indiana also ranks a more-than-respectable 26th in total defense (280 yards/game), 29th in scoring defense (17.0 points/game) and 35th in pass defensive efficiency (101.68). The only two statistical categories that IU isn't ranked in the top 50 of Division I football programs is net punting (52nd – 36.25/punt) and pass defense (80th – 242.0 yards/game).
15 – receptions for Zip wide receiver Jabari Arthur in the first two games, ranking his 17th nationally in receptions/game. Like Western Michigan's Jamarko Simmons, Arthur is a big wideout at 6'4" and 225 pounds and is clearly the No. 1 target of Akron's quarterbacks. His 15 receptions is nearly half of the team's total of 34, and he's averaging 78.5 yards/game receiving while the rest of the team combined is averaging 31.5 yards receiving per contest. A native of Montreal, Arthur was actually a first-round pick in last year's CFL Draft but instead opted to return to Akron for his senior season. He caught a team-best 45 passes for 730 yards a year ago.
1 – this marks the first time Indiana has ever played Akron, making them one of only four teams the Hoosiers have never played from the MAC. The only other foes from the 13-team Mid-America Conference to never appear on the IU schedule are Buffalo, Bowling Green and Temple. After last week's 37-27 win over Western Michigan Indiana owns a 30-4-1 record against MAC teams. All of those losses have come in Bloomington, with three coming against Miami, Ohio (1954, 1966, 1977) and one against Ohio (1929).
12 – times in the history of IU football that the Hoosiers have started a season 3-0. The 2007 season marks the 121st edition of Hoosier football, with Coach Bill Lynch trying to lead IU to a 3-0 start for just the 13th time. The last time it happened was in Terry Hoeppner's debut season in 2005, but a 3-0 start gave way to a 1-7 finish and a 4-7 mark. Prior to that, IU's last 3-0 start was in 1994, which was also the program's last winning season (6-5). Other memorable 3-0 starts occurred in 1993 (finished 8-4 and appeared in the Independence Bowl, IU's last bowl berth); 1986 (finished 6-6 and went the All-America Bowl, the first of six bowl berths for Bill Mallory coached teams); 1979 (finished 8-4 and beat Brigham Young in the Holiday Bowl); and 1967 (went 9-2, won the Big Ten and went to the program's only Rose Bowl).
