Chattanooga 2007-08 Statistics

What kind of shape is Armon Bassett in? – After scoring 15 points in the first half of Saturday's exhibition win over UNC-Pembroke, the Hoosier point guard departed with an ankle injury and didn't return in the second half. Afterwards Coach Kelvin Sampson said he thought Bassett could have played if he had needed to, but with the season opener just two days away he instead opted to rest him for the Chattanooga contest. The first thing to look for is whether or not Bassett is in the starting line-up, and whether or not he appears limited or not. Odds are that Bassett should be near 100 percent, which is good news for an IU team that will rely a great deal on the abilities of Bassett, Eric Gordon and Jamarcus Ellis to get into the lane and either finish or create for others.

Will A.J. Ratliff be seated courtside? - Ratliff's presence – or lack there of – won't have any impact on the outcome of this contest since the senior shooting guard is academically ineligible for the first semester. But rumors have swirled in the last 48 hours about his status with the team, and the fact he wasn't on the bench for Sunday's exhibition game only added fuel to the fire. IU athletic department officials said today that Ratliff is still a member of the basketball team, and his absence on Sunday is an internal matter. But it's still a subject that figures to come up in the postgame press conference, and it's a situation that could have an impact on the team by the time the second semester rolls around.

How will Chattanooga go about matching up with Eric Gordon? - Chattanooga actually has some size on its frontline, with three players who stand 6-7 or taller expected to start. But the starting backcourt of 5-9 Kevin Bridgewaters and 5-11 Stephen McDowell will have a huge problem trying to match-up physically with the 6-4, 215-pound Gordon. If Chattanooga opts to play man-to-man, McDowell would be giving up five inches and 35 pounds to Gordon and he can expect to see Gordon attacking him off the dribble at every opportunity. If Chattanooga opts to play zone instead, it will be contending with an IU squad that shot 18-of-36 from 3-point range on Sunday against UNC-Pembroke, including a 6-of-8 effort from Gordon. Anyway you look at it, Chattanooga will be hard pressed to keep Gordon from going off for a huge game in his regular season debut in an IU uniform.

How many 3-pointers will Chattanooga launch tonight? - In its' season-opening 61-point win over Convenant, Chattanooga was 16-of-29 (55.2 percent) from behind the 3-point arc. Ten of the 13 players who got in the game attempted at least one 3-pointer, so Indiana can count on the 3-point barrage coming from every direction. Add in the fact that Indiana's size inside figures to dissuade Chattanooga from venturing too close, and it's likely that the Mocs will eclipse the 29 3-point attempts from its last outing.

"I would pretty much say it is D.J.'s team. He has been here for four years, and from all the publicity that he has been getting. He is the captain, and he leads us in practice and in games. He is our biggest factor." – IU freshman Eric Gordon

""It's a basketball game. We'll play the one on Saturday, we'll get ready to play the one on Monday, nothing more." – IU Coach Kelvin Sampson on the team's quick turnaround from Saturday.

"I think all the guys look up to me for that leadership spot, somebody that has been through the Big Ten season, so some of the guys are curious about what is it like playing at this place, playing at that place. As the season goes go, playing against tougher opponents, things like that. Anything they want to know I try to fill them in." – D.J. White

"Hopefully you saw a different Chattanooga team (in the season opening win). A fresh team, a quick team, a running team. After spending many hours watching us play last year, I couldn't take it anymore. We're going to open it up a lot offensively." – Chattanooga Coach John Shulman

"Quick shots, you avoid a couple of things. You avoid turnovers, and you're also able to destroy the offensive boards." – Shulman

Verice Cloyd transferred to UTC in the off-season from Alabama, but he won't have to spend the usual one season on the sidelines for transferring. Late last week, the NCAA cleared Cloyd to begin playing right away because he decided to transfer so that he could be closer to Nashville and his mother, Brenda Blackwell, who is terminally ill…Chattanooga might have shot 29 3-pointers in its season opening win, but that number pales in comparison to Convenant, which attempted 44 3-pointers…Chattanooga has a long run of success. Since going Division I in 1977-78, it has compiled a 575-326 record (63.8 percent)…Chattanooga is 1-15 all-time against the Big Ten, but its one win came against 19th-ranked Illinois in 1997 and propelled the Mocs to the Sweet 16… Chattanooga's leading scorer, Stephen McDowell was born in Indianapolis but played his high school basketball in suburban Atlanta.
