Bloomington, Ind. – When it comes to landing its top wide receiver recruit, Indiana isn't out of the woods just yet.
J.D. Woods, the 6-2, 185-pound wideout from Naples (Fla.) Golden Gate H.S., has admitted to being enamored with the Hoosier program for months, but IU still has plenty of formidable recruiting competition to fend off. Woods, who made an official visit to IU in September, is headed to UConn for an official visit this weekend and will then go to West Virginia the weekend of Dec.7.
But there's more than those two Big East schools for IU to worry about. Woods also has offers from West Virginia, Pitt, UAB, Florida Atlantic and just recently added an offer from Purdue.
"Recruiting has been crazy these last couple of weeks," Woods said. "There were times that I wanted to commit and just get it over with, but I'm glad I waited it out, and fortunate I have all these schools interested in me. I see it as a blessing."
Indiana remains extremely interested in Woods, whose prep teammate Peter St. Fort has already committed to the Hoosiers. IU Assistant Coach Billy Lynch made an in-home visit with Woods Wednesday night and reiterated his interest.
"My grandparents really liked (Lynch), and I've been impressed with him for a while," said Woods, who caught 54 passes for 851 yards and eight touchdowns as a senior. "He's a really good recruiter, and he'd be my position coach as well which he stressed. It's not like he's the defensive line coach who's recruiting me."
Lynch also laid out a short-term and long-term vision for what kind of player he'd see Woods being at IU.
"He wants me to come in and be the receiver that (James) Hardy was," Woods said. "He stressed he's not going to expect that from me my freshman year or sophomore year, but by my junior year, he wants me to be almost like Hardy, and hopefully a little better."
The IU staff has also made it clear to Woods that he's not just another guy on their board. With only a handful of scholarships remaining, Lynch has made it apparent to Woods that he's the wide receiver he wants.
"He's said I'm not only a recruit for them, I'm the top recruit for them," Woods said.
