Bloomington, Ind. – Kelvin Sampson is hopeful to have guards Eric Gordon and A.J. Ratliff back for Saturday's game against Western Carolina, but two other Hoosiers won't be available.
Sophomore guard Armon Bassett and freshman forward Eli Holman are both expected to miss Saturday's game, but for different reasons. Sampson said Holman suffered a wrist injury in practice Wednesday and is out indefinitely. Bassett, meanwhile, will miss a second straight game for violating an unspecified team rule.
While Bassett should be back soon, Holman could be sidelined for awhile after suffering the injury late in Wednesday's practice. X-rays were negative, but there remains a possibility of ligament damage.
If the injury proves to be season-ending, Holman would likely be able to petition for a medical redshirt. A new NCAA rule, implemented in January of 2006, allows players to petition for the extra year of eligibility if the injury occurred during the first 30 percent of the season. Indiana is nine games into a 31-game regular season schedule, or 28.1 percent.
"We haven't talked about (a medical redshirt) yet," Sampson said. "We'll have to wait and see how serious it is."
Bassett, meanwhile, will miss a second straight game for team rules violations. Sampson still declined to specify how long Bassett would be suspended, but said he'd "be back soon."
The second-year IU coach also laughed off rumors more suspensions were on the horizon because he was staggering suspensions. Jordan Crawford served a three-game suspension before returning against Kentucky, the same game that Bassett started his suspension.
"I'm not staggering them," Sampson said. "I react to them as they come…If they all happened at the same time, they would have all done it at the same time. But there's absolutely no staggering."
While Bassett and Holman are out, Sampson is hopeful he'll have Gordon and Ratliff back this weekend.
Gordon suffered a back/hip injury against Tennessee State Dec. 3 and missed the Kentucky game Saturday. Sampson said Gordon was unable to practice all of last week, but was once again practicing fullcourt Wednesday.
"I fully expect him to play," Sampson said.
Ratliff could possibly return as well. The senior guard missed the season's first nine games after being declared academically ineligible for first semester, and could be cleared to play Saturday if all of his grades have been reported and recorded. First semester finals conclude Friday, so it could go down to wire before it's known if he will be cleared to play.
